In 2021, Robin’s Home proudly partnered with Dr. Seth Lee from Slippery Rock University to enhance his writing course, transforming it into a unique, hands-on experience. This version of the course moved beyond traditional research papers, giving students the chance to engage in service-related activities while connecting with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Robin’s Home played a key role by providing students the opportunity to document the powerful and often overlooked stories of women veterans.
The course, centered on multimodal storytelling, allowed students to capture another person’s story through text, images, and audio, encouraging them to reflect on the power and responsibility of storytelling. As Dr. Lee explained:
“Why do we write stories? What attracts us to them? Why record someone’s story? What responsibilities do we have when we tell someone’s story?”
Robin’s Home was chosen for this collaboration because of its dedication to supporting women veterans – individuals who serve honorably while facing unique challenges. The course not only enhanced students’ critical writing skills but also fostered empathy and understanding by bridging diverse experiences.
Dr. Lee praised the projects as some of the best he’s ever seen, noting their creativity and impact. One student shared: “It was one of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever contributed to.”
This partnership stands as a testament to how education can drive connection and change, encouraging students to think deeply about their role as storytellers.
“This is not your average college writing class,” Dr. Lee remarked.
The projects produced through this collaboration have been powerful and moving, showcasing the incredible potential of students and veterans working together.
We are honored to partner with Slippery Rock University and Dr. Lee to amplify the voices of veterans and ensure their stories are heard. Thank you for dedication to empowering students and honoring veterans!
